Paris History
Paris has a deep-rooted cultural heritage that dates back two millennia, when the Romans village of Lutetia was founded on the Ile de la Cite.  In the old days, the central island housed government institutions, the left bank of the Seine housed the University, and the right bank became the center of trade and commerce.  Les Halles marketplace was the commercial hub of the city.  During the Hundreds Years’ War, it lost its position as the French capital due to the English occupation.  The city as reclaimed by Charles VII in 1437 and has been the capital ever since.
