The Tourism Authority of Thailand has issued a statement on Saturday, January 18 2014, stating that Thailand is open for tourists. Despite the street protests taking place against the government, tourists have not been attacked and although tourists are advised to stay away from demonstration sites, the city is generally peaceful.
A Press Release issued by the Ministry of Tourism states, “Although the atmosphere around the rally sites remains normal and eventful (festive-like) – especially during the evening, tourists are advised to be vigilant and avoid the rally locations as well as areas where large crowds of demonstrators may gather, including routings of the anti-government demonstrators’ daily marches. However, it should be stressed that tourists have not been targeted in the current political demonstrations.”
Visitors returning home from Bangkok are also recommended to leave for the airport at least four hours before their flight as traffic snarls are expected all over Bangkok.
