Dubai International Airport recorded a 12.6% increase in passenger numbers in July, the highest monthly growth rate since May 2008 (13.8%). Passenger traffic increased 10.3% in June so this is the second consecutive month of double digit increases. In July 2009 3,768,965 passengers transited through Dubai International Airport compared to 3,347,655 during the same period last year. Year to date passenger traffic through the end of July is up 6.1% at 23,148,452 – compared to the same period last year.
Cargo transport through DIA continues to register slow growth at 1.9% in July, handling 160,289 tons of freight compared to 157,253 tons in July 2008. CEO of DIA, Paul Griffiths, said “The Middle East continues to demonstrate vibrant growth during the global economic downturn and Dubai International Airport is at the epicenter of that growth.” He attributed the double digit increases in passenger growth directly to “a boost in passenger numbers from Emirates and other long-haul network carriers.”
