A top government official said Egypt will proceed with its planned Dh4.14 billion ($6.3 billion Egyptian pounds) airport expansion despite the global economic crisis and slowdown in aviation activities around the world. 4.3 billion will be spent on three new airports which will have a combined 10 million passenger capacity. An official with Cairo Airport Company said the three new airports are Burg El Arab Airport, Hurgada Airport, and Asyout Airport. Ihsan Sadak said Burg El Arab will be ready in one year and the other two will take between two and three years.
Egypt will spend about Dh1.38 billion (2 billion pounds) for reconstruction at Terminal 2 at Cairo International Airport. Terminal 3 opened on 27 April 2009 and with an annual capacity of 11 million passengers, brings the airports total annual passenger capacity to 24 million. Cairo International Airport is Egypt’s largest airport.
