The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) says the new navigational system being implemented by the Abu Dhabi International Airport will boost airspace efficiency and decrease congested skies. Abu Dhabi International Airport is the first airport in the Middle East to use the new system, and airports in Dubai and elsewhere will follow.
The new navigational system, called RNAV 1, decreases airspace corridors from 16 km wide to 3.1 km wide so this will allow for the addition of more corridors around airports. GCAA acting director of air navigation services said the new system is necessary in order to make the best use of airspace, which is congested.
