Qatar Airways announced it plans to manufacture and supply sustainable bio jet fuel. The announcement follows the carrier’s success in October at operating a commercial flight from London that was powered by a gas-to-liquid fuel blend (GTL). Qatar is entering into the joint project with Qatar Petroleum (QP) Qatar Science and Technology Park (QTSP), and Airbus.
Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al-Baker told a press conference in Doha on Sunday that “Building on the experience and success of the GTL Consortium, we now move to the next phase of alternative fuels while continuing to develop GTL further. While others talk, we take action.” Qatar Airways, QTSP, and US based Verno Systems Inc. began a comprehensive study seven months ago on the use of sustainable biomass-to-liquid (BTL) jet fuel. The partners subsequently agreed to establish the Qatar Advanced Biofuel Platform (QABP).
