Oman Air posted a 17 percent increase in passenger traffic last year, despite difficulties affecting the aviation industry around the world. Oman’s flagship carrier was able to increase its fleet by eight craft to a total of 21 with the introduction of the Airbus A330. Oman Air added five new destinations over the past year, bringing its total number of scheduled flight destinations to 32. It also added frequencies to important destinations.
Oman Air’s cargo division saw an impressive 67 percent increase in revenue year-on-year, although the increase was from a low base. Oman Air’s freight division accounted for only 2 percent of total revenues in 2008, much lower than other carriers. CEO Peter Hill said the company must increase this ratio to 12 percent of total revenues over the next five years. During 2010, the carrier plans to extend its network to Katmandu, Kuala Lumpur, and other locations in East Africa. Two more A330 aircraft will join its fleet over the next year.
