Chief Executive of Dubai Airports said the biggest challenge ahead will be to keep the entire system from becoming totally gridlocked. Paul Griffiths, speaking at the airport show in Dubai on Sunday said airport movements are projected to increase from 53 per hour today to 169 per hour over the next few years. He said this will create difficulties because there are several no-fly zones around the airport.
The rapid expansion of airports in the UAE includes the addition of another concourse at Dubai International Airport. Passenger numbers are expected to reach 60 million by 2020. The Al Maktoum International airport is worth $8.1 billion and will be part of a mammoth logistics and cargo hub. It will be the world’s largest airport, having a capacity for 160 million passengers and over 12 million tones of cargo each year.
