European carrier Lufthansa Airlines is considering launching several new flights to Iraq because demand for flights into the country is increasing. Lufthansa plans to begin flight service to the capital Baghdad and the city of Erbil in northern Iraq from Frankfurt and Munich. The carrier plans to launch the new service next summer after it has obtained necessary traffic rights and reviewed infrastructure requirements.
Lufthansa currently operates 89 flights per week to 13 destinations in ten countries, and had operated flights from Baghdad until the Gulf War started in 1990. Austrian Airlines, which is part of the Lufthansa Group, already operates to flights to Erbil. Beginning next summer Baghdad and Erbil will be linked to Lufthansa’s hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, and integrated into Lufthansa’s global network.
