Qatar Airways will commence flights to the exotic highland city of Asmara in Eritrea from December 4 2014. Asmara was the largest Italian enclave in Africa in the 19th century and remained under Italian control until 1941 when it was taken over by the British. Eritrea finally gained independence in 1999 and Asmara is the country’s capital.
Italian architecture is visible all over the city which is situated at a height of over 7,500 ft. Asmara has a mild climate with highs of around 26C in the summer and lows of 12C. In winter, temperatures range from 6C to 23C.
On October 26 2014, Qatar Airways started flights to nearby Djibouti.
