Global Sources (NASDAQ: GSOL), a leading business-to-business media company and a primary facilitator of trade reports that U.A.E (United Arab Emirates) international trade is rapidly changing and businesses in the U.A.E. need to develop new trading partners with the East.
Mr Bill Janeri, General Manager, Global Sources said, “The Middle East is built on trading. It is interwoven with our culture. From pearls, to mineral resources, to all types of consumer goods. Many families in the United Arab Emirates have built financial success based on trading. So where do we turn to in a hard economy? It’s only right to look at our successes. The trouble is, the world of trading has changed dramatically in the past decades. What is needed is traditional Middle East trading, with a modern understanding. In 2010 over 14,000 professionals from the region knew where to find the answer and that answer is not far away.”
Trade from China to the Middle East is growing quickly. In the years between 1999 and 2009 total imports from China to the U.A.E. grew on average a rate of 31.1% (according to a 2010 report from Al Masah Capital Management Limited). In 2010 China’s exports to the U.A.E. were at $23.9 billion and China was this country’s largest trading partner representing 15.03% of all imports. These imports rage from machinery and textiles to mechanical appliances, base metals, plastics, and rubber products. According to The Middle East Exports Opportunities survey conducted in May 2007, 58% of Chinese exporters currently export to the Middle East, 13% for more than the last 20 years. Of the suppliers not yet exporting over 20% plans to start before the end of this year 2010.
Of course re-export is a big business for the U.A.E. The country is the world’s third-largest re-export. The U.A.E. must continue to take the leadership position in serving the rest of the MENA (Middle East North Africa) region and helping to facilitate regional economic growth and stability through increased trade.
