September 27 2013 is World Tourism Day. The United Nations World Tourism Organization has declared today as a day marked for recognizing the role of tourism in improving and caring for one of the most precious resources we have – water.
This year’s theme – Water: Protecting our Common Future – highlights tourism’s role in water access and shines a spotlight on the actions being taken by the sector in order to contribute to a more sustainable water future. With over one billion people traveling internationally each year, the over $1 trillion tourism industry can be an important vehicle of raising awareness and changing behaviors.
World Tourism Day 2013 official celebrations on 27 September are being hosted by the Maldives which is affected by global warming and rising sea levels which threaten the very existence of the country which is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
