According to a new report by the hotel research firm Lodging Econometrics Dubai hotels are, on average the biggest in the world, overtaking Los Vegas. The average project size for hotels in Dubai is 417 rooms compared to 402 rooms in Las Vegas. Many of the Dubai projects were planned when the hotel industry was booming and there was a shortage of rooms. A Lodging Econometrics report spokesman said “They were meeting demand and the financing was available at the time that the projects started construction.”
Analysts say as the new hotel rooms open this will put more pressure on revenues and occupancy rates. According to Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) the number of hotel rooms increased 17 per cent during the first half of the year to 58,147 compared to 49,656 for the same period last year.
