More than 200 Dubai hotels will compete for a carbon emissions reduction award which will be presented in December. The hotels will attempt to reduce their carbon emissions by more than 20% in order to make the hospitality industry more sustainable.
Dubai hotels generate considerably more carbon emissions than their counterparts in Europe – about 6,500 tons of carbon emissions every year. Hotels in Europe generate only 3,000 tonnes per year. This indicates that Dubai must make much more progress in order to become environmentally aware. Eyad Ali Abdul Rahman said Dubai hotels consume 850 litres of water per guest per year but Europe hotels use only 350 liters of water per year. Rahman is Executive Director of Media Relations and Business Development for Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing.
