The British Museum has a collection of over seven million objects from all continents and periods of human history. Established in 1753 by King George II using the collection given to the nation by Sir Hans Sloane, the museum grew and expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries with the contributions of ambassadors and collectors, who brought in Greek and Roman sculptures, the most famous of which are the Elgin marbles, and Egyptian artifacts like the Rosetta Stone.
