Although contemporary, Abu Dhabi’s bus system is slow and clings to no rigid timetable. It runs 24 hours a day and is favored mostly by the local workers due to its cheap fares. Some of the buses have a maximum capacity of 45 passengers. However, bus drivers have stated that as many as 100 passengers travel at one time. In 2009, the Department of Transport anticipates having 21 bus routes in the city. A total of 1,360 buses are expected to be underway by 2010. The buses are modern and air-conditioned and have seats reserved in the front for ladies.
