The Hippodrome is a large open-air stadium in a quiet Almaty neighborhood, which holds horse races several times during the year. Head there if you are a racing enthusiast. Betting is not very open – be careful if you plan to gamble. You get caught, and a corrupt officer might want a share of the betting amount.
It is advisable to call and ask what shows are scheduled in advance rather than head there directly. The place is located quite far away from downtown Almaty, and a lot of time could be wasted traveling to the hippodrome and back.
You can go visit the place in a cab, or take Bus # 8 heading north on Kunaev Street from the Tole Bi intersection.
