Located in West Amman’s trendy Sweifieh district, Wakalat Street is Jordan’s first pedestrian only area.  The street was closed off to cars in 2007.  It was repaved and trees were planted.  It’s lined with retail outlets, cafes, and restaurants.  Sweifieh is also a nightlife hub, and several bars and clubs are within a few blocks.

It’s not authentic Jordan, but Wakalat Street is a cool destination anyway.  It feels more European, and adds to Amman’s cosmopolitan flare.  The shopping here is pretty good too.  Several western brands have stores here, including the Gap.   Keep in mind that consumer goods in Jordan are generally quite a bit more expensive than in most countries.
