This annual race is in memory of the famous messenger who ran all the way from Marathon to Athens to inform the people of the victory of the Greeks over the Persians. The tradition dates back to 490 BC and is still observed. The race now begins at Marathon and terminates at the Panathenaic Stadium which makes it over 40 kilometers long.
