Chicago Cultural Center
The Chicago Cultural Center was built between 1893 and 1897 as a public library. It is built in the Neoclassical style, with touches from the Italian Renaissance. When the new Harold Washington Library was built in 1991, it was converted into a cultural center. The Cultural Center is also renowned for its intricate and ornamental details, including white Carrara marble staircases, delicate mosaics, glass, stone, and mother of pearl adornments, and vaulted ceilings. There are two large domes on the third floor, including one made of Tiffany-stained glass.
Today the Cultural Center is the venue for Chicago’s official receptions, where the mayor welcomes presidents, royalty, and diplomats. It is also one of the most comprehensive art showcases in the Unite States. It houses public spaces for free concerts and performances of all kinds. There are two concert halls and two theaters — something is always going on. Every weekday at 13:00 a live music show is held at the Randolph Cafe.
You could easily spend an entire day here exploring the magnificent halls. The Landmark Chicago Gallery showcases the history of Chicago through photography. There are several galleries displaying artists from Chicago and around the world. The Chicago Cultural Center is one of the most spectacular buildings in the United States.
