Fine Arts Building
The Fine Arts Building, also known as the Studebaker Building, was built in 1885 for the Studebaker company by architect Solon S. Beman. It is a striking example of Romanesque architecture. Studebaker soon vacated the building, and it was renovated into a hub of fine arts. As the name would suggest, it is filled with offices, art galleries, lofts, recording studios, and shops, nearly all related to the world of art.
The interior features an art nouveau motif, and eight spectacular 19th century murals. The lobby and the elevators are all original and unrestored. Coming here is like going through a time warp to the late 1800s. The Fine Arts Building is also filled with one of a kind shops. You can buy hand made instruments and check out the city’s best used bookstore. There’s always something interesting happening.
On the second Friday of each month, there is an open house where you can view all the art on display and meet the artists. The Fine Arts Building is definitely worth a visit, if only for the atmosphere.
