Smart Museum of Art
The Smart Museum of Art is named for David and Alfred Smart, the founders of Esquire Magazine and the museum’s benefactor. It was founded in 1974 and is the art museum of the University of Chicago. There are more than 8,000 works on display, split into four different collections: Asian Art, Contemporary Art, European Art, and Modern Art and Design.
The Asian Art collection includes Korean ceramics and Japanese engravings. The European collection features fine works from some lesser known artists. There is also the original furniture from the Robie House, and a tranquil sculpture garden. Excellent special themed exhibitions are held regularly.
The museum’s collection is compact but diverse. It provides an excellent overview of world art. The Smart Museum is overlooked by most tourists, so a visit will be quiet and relaxing. The Smart Cafe is a great place to grab a quick bite.
