Health and Safety
Christchurch is a safe city apart from provoked drunk strangers in dark alleyways. Aggressive acts of violence are rare and tourists feel safe getting out in the evenings for a leisurely stroll. In the winter months, the city is heavily blanketed by smog which can cause accidents for drivers and may lead to breathing problems if one has such a medical condition.
Christchurch was hit by major earthquakes in 2010 and early 2011. These natural disasters have caused most of the facilities to be shut down and an emergency condition has been called for the city. If you feel tremors of the earthquake do not panic and call the following emergency numbers.
