Dubai Museum

The Dubai Museum is located in the restored Al Fahidi Fort, which was built around 1787 to defend the city from invasion.  In its long history, the fort served as a seat of government, the royal residence, ammunition storage, and a jail.  In 1971, it was converted into a museum.  The diverse collection on display offers fascinating insight into the rich history and cultural heritage of Dubai, dating back to the 3rd millennium BC.

Exhibits are split into four main categories: commercial life, domestic life, life in the desert, and life on the sea.  Typical homes and labyrinthine souks are recreated here, and help bring to life the customs of the day.  Displays also give insight into the commercial life of early Dubai, where dhow building, fishing, and pearl diving were the mainstays of the economy.

This is an informative museum with clear displays.  Anyone interested in Dubai’s history should check it out.
