The Youth and Sports Day is held on 19 May every year. The day is set aside for celebrating the arrival of Ataturk at Samsun, which was the historic occurrence that marked the beginning of Turkey’s War of Independence in 1919. Ceremonies are held in Istanbul and other major cities, during which athletes carry the Turkish flag to the shore at the Samsun harbor. Memorial wreaths are laid in Anitkabir which is the location of Ataturk’s mausoleum.
