Though taxis are easily available in Istanbul, it is better to have your hotel call one for you. The airport and most hotels have their own taxi services which are more reliable, and the drivers usually speak a little English. Taxis found around the main tourist spots should be avoided. Night-time rates are always high. The starting fare is usually around 2.50 YTL and after that it is about 1.20 YTL per kilometer. During the day, the meter should say gunduz to show that the daytime rate is being charged while after midnight it will say gece (night) and the rate will be 50% higher.
