The city is home to a mix of people ranging from Asians to black and white Africans, hence, the culture too is a hodgepodge of several cultures. Black residents however outnumber white and Asian residents considerably. Crime rate in the city is very high.

South African men are prone to sexism and modern concepts such as equality of the sexes have not yet made their mark in the typical South African mind. However, times are gradually changing and women are refusing to put up with such attitudes.
As with the high crime rates, sexual assault is also a very stark reality in the city so women travelers should be extra careful when traveling alone.
