Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

Founded in 1998, this is a comprehensive museum dedicated to art in the Islamic world.  It is one of just a few museums dedicated solely to Islamic art, and perhaps the best.  The building itself is elegantly designed and decorated.  There are five different domes.  In the entrance hall is an inverted dome, adorned with arabesque and gilded cartouches.

While the focus is on Malaysia, there are galleries from throughout the Muslim world.  The architecture display, which has miniature models of several mosques, is a highlight.  The calligraphy collection has beautiful displays from the Quran, some dating back to the 10th century.  Other galleries include Textiles, Arms & Armor, Metalwork, and Ceramics.

Unlike a lot of museums in the region, the information accompanying the exhibits is thorough and does a good job of giving them context.  There’s also a café and the roof offers great views of KL.  There are a lot of other attractions in the immediate area too.  The Islamic Arts Museum should definitely be near the top of your list of things to do in Kuala Lumpur.
