New Year’s Day, the single most important festival of the Chinese, is celebrated in late January/ mid February and the date varies as it is in accordance with the lunar calendar. The city is ablaze with the color red as it is the traditional color of this festival. Colorful lion and dragon dances dazzle spectators as they witness a massive parade which is part of the celebrations. On display is the best of traditional and contemporary Chinese arts, with performers both from London and China. The annual lighting up of Chinese lanterns takes place at Oxford Circus. The event is organized by the London Chinatown Chinese Association.
