Millennium Bridge

This pedestrian bridge has become a landmark of twenty-first century London.  The 330m long bridge connects the City of London with Bankside, and crosses from St. Paul’s Cathedral to the Tate Modern art gallery.  Completed in 2000, it was the first pedestrian crossing of the Thames built in more than a century.  Unfortunately, engineers failed to account for the lateral oscillations caused when large groups of people walk together. When it opened the bridge wobbled noticeably when enough people were on it. It had to be closed down for two years while dampers were installed. Since reopening in 2002, there have been no issues, so no worries.

There is no admission fee to go on the bridge.

Nearest tube station: Blackfriars, Mansion House and London Bridge tube stations are the closest places from where you can walk to the Millennium Bridge.
