Although public healthcare is of superior standards, it is usually not free for visitors. Therefore, getting a traveller’s health insurance plan is highly recommended before you arrive in Montreal. It is advisable to carry the insurance papers around in cases of emergency. Prescribed medication should be brought from the home country and should be carried around at all times.

Tapwater is safe to drink, and public toilets are safe to use. In 2007 Montreal was ranked as the world’s 10th cleanest city by Forbes Magazine.
Smoking is socially unacceptable, and disallowed on buses, the metro, inside government facilities, in bars and restaurants, and in public areas like malls, banks and cinemas.

A network of hospitals around the city that are affiliated with McGill University provide health services in English and French, to locals and tourists both, although the charges for foreigners are usually higher.
