McGill University and McCord Museum
McGill University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Canada. It has the oldest law school in Canada. The campus has tree lined walkways and an eclectic mix of nineteenth century and modern/postmodern architecture. The atmosphere is collegial; all the students make the campus come alive. During the day you can visit the departments, gardens, and of course the bookstore. In the evening, refresh yourself with a stroll along the romantically lit walkways.
The McCord Museum is a teaching museum located on campus (though not affiliated with the university since 1971). It has permanent exhibitions dedicated to Canadian and Montreal history. The collection is surprisingly large, with a variety of archaeological artifacts, costumes, clothing, paintings, and decorative arts. The Notman Photographic Archives contains more than 1.3 million photos documenting life in Quebec and Canada from the 1840s to the present.
It’s worth a visit, especially for history lovers, but it may be redundant if you’ve already been to Montreal’s other history museums.
