ImageStart the day in Montreal’s Old Town (or Vieux Montreal).  Here you can catch a glimpse of the city’s past.  The Point á Calliere Museum, built on the site of Montreal’s earliest known settlement, provides a deep insight into the city’s historical development.

Nearby is the Old Port of Montreal, a modern waterfront development at the city’s old shipyard.  Enjoy the waterfront promenade and photograph the spectacular views of the skyline.  If you have kids along, stop by the Montreal Science Center.

Near the Old Port is the Place Jacques-Cartier, a public square.  In the summer, grab some coffee and people watch at one of the outdoor cafes.  There’s always something going on here, including street performers.  Try one of the many exquisite French restaurants in this area for lunch.  The Bonsecours Market is a large colonial building filled with boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries.  It’s a great place to explore.

Next head downtown.  If you didn’t feel like paying through the nose for a French lunch, downtown has just about any cuisine you can ask for.  Enjoy a delectable meal in Little Italy or Chinatown depending on your mood.  There’s also the Complex Les Ailes and the Atwater Market, two of the city’s most popular markets.

The Underground City is a great way to escape the cold during the winter.  The Eaton Center is the largest underground shopping center in the world.  It has an amazing variety of boutiques and restaurants – a must for a shopping lover.

As evening approaches, head to Parc du Mont Royal in Le Plateau district.  This is the city’s largest public park.  The views are breathtaking.  You can enjoy the miles of paths, or lay out on the open fields.  Catch the sunset and then get dinner in the Le Plateau district.  This is one of Montreal’s hippest neighborhoods and there is no shortage of trendy cafes and restaurants.  If you’re so inclined grab a night cap at one of the many clubs and bars.
