Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site

This historic site is located in two in two early 19th century Victorian villas of the Cartier family.  They have been renovated and now serve as a cultural and educational center.  Known as the ‘Father of the Confederation’, George Cartier played an instrumental role in the independence of Canada.  He helped bring Quebec into the confederation, and later served as one of the country’s first Prime Minster.

The two houses are furnished in the Victorian style, with original period furnishings.  Audio plays in each room to explain what’s on display.  Guided tours are available, and there are often different presentations and performances about Victorian Canada and the independence movement.  It is an interesting place to visit and definitely has something to offer, even among all the other historic sites in Old Montreal.  George Cartier’s house is well worth a visit, especially considering the cheap admission.
