Though it is not nearly as extensive as the Paris Metro that inspired it, the Montreal Metro is an efficient way to get around the city. Construction began in 1966, in preparation for the World’s Fair, and has continued in fits and starts since. It is Canada’s longest and busiest subway system (ahead of Vancouver and Toronto), carrying more than 1,000,000 passengers per day. There are four lines running 70km, with 68 stops. Nearly all of Montreal’s big attractions are accessible via metro.
Tickets can be purchased at booths in each station. One trip costs $3.00. One-day ($8.00) and three-day ($16.00) cards are also available. These passes can be bought at most metro stations and the Tourism Information Office. All tickets and passes are also good for buses.
