Mumbai, a port city on the western coast, is India’s economic capital, its financial center and the heart of the Hindi film industry. Major industries in India are head-quartered here. It is also the centre for India’s booming textile industry.

Mumbai is a vibrant city, pulsating with life, with hope, with expectations. It is a city where hordes of people migrate to each year with stars in their eyes and a dream in their hearts. Mumbai is famous for its ‘bhelpuri’ on the famous Chowpatty beach, its red double-decker buses and colonial architecture, a residual of the British Raj.

Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Hotel and Gateway of India are as much characteristic of the city as are the Dharavi slums made famous by the Hollywood movie, Slumdog Millionaire.

Known earlier as Bombay, the city grew over three centuries from a collection of seven swampy islands which were, through the years, connected by extensive land reclamation. The core area called the “Island City” has the most expensive real estate in all of India. Over the years, the city has grown far into the mainland both to the north and to the east, forcing residents to travel for over an hour to work each day.

Mumbai has an intensive network of suburban rail systems that carry a total of 2.2 billion passengers each year.
