Primarily celebrated by the Sikh community of northern India, Baisakhi is a harvest festival where the rewards of hard labor on the soil is reaped and the fruits of a rich harvest are enjoyed. It is also an auspicious day for the Sikhs as it marks the founding of the Sikh brotherhood in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh. The festival is characterized by reading of the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, followed by singing, dancing and feasting.
