ImageThe birth anniversary of  Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of the Sikh faith, is celebrated with reverence and devotion as Guru Nanak Jayanti. Processions are taken out in the city that start from the gurdwaras( Sikh temples). Akhand Pat or reading of the holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib takes place for three days where it is read continuosly, from the beginning to the end without a break. The holy book is carried in the procession on a float decorated with flowers. The procession is headed  by five armed guards carrying the Sikh flag. School children and local bands playing religious music are also part of the procession. Free community meals called ‘langar’ are offered to all irrespective of their religion. People participate in the cooking and distribution of the meal as part of ‘kar seva’ or service to the community. On this day people sing devotional songs and reaffirm their belief in all that was taught by their Guru.
