A grand celebration of Mango, the ‘King of Fruits’, takes place each year in the capital. Held since 1987, this two day event showcases a huge variety of the luscious fruit. The largest producer of mangoes, India grows more than eleven hundred varieties of mangoes in different parts of the country. The Mango Festival is the place to discover the magic of mangoes in all their immense variety. It is organized by the Delhi Tourism Development Corporation in collaboration with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, the National Horticultural Board and the New Delhi Municipal Corporation. This festival provides a platform for mango growers and agro-industries and food industries processing mango (pickle, jam, squashes, canned fruit, etc) from across the country to exhibit their products. The idea behind this festival is to promote tourism as well as export. Some varieties of mango exhibited here are alphonso, amrapali, chorasya, balia and malda. Chefs from renowned hotels also demonstrate an assortment of mango-based recipes.
Various other activities in the festival include cultural programs and various competitions like mango eating, mango slogan writing, quiz about mangoes etc.
