Parc de la Villette
Located at
the very edge of Paris city proper, just inside the Boulevard Periphérique, the
Parc de la Villette is one of the city’s newest. It was built between 1984 and 1987 as part of
an urban redevelopment project on the site of Paris’ old slaughterhouses and
meat market. The park is notable for its
unique architecture and is one of the best places in the city for kids.
There are
many acres of gardens and a conservatory, but the real attraction of the park
is the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie, the biggest science museum in
Europe. The crux of the museum is the
Explora exhibit which examines four central themes: communication, life,
matter, and the universe. There’s also
the largest 3-D IMAX Screen in Europe in the La Géode domed theatre. Both kids and adults will enjoy all of the
interactive exhibits and science projects. Just a warning: not everything is in English, though you should still be
able to enjoy the museum.
