Hotel Royal began as a pilgrim hostel in 1566, was burned down in the Second World War, and reopened in 1960. Situated in a quiet area in the heart of Vienna, very close to the famous St. Stephan’s Cathedral, on the most famous shopping street Graben, Karntnerstrabe and Kohlmarkt, this nine-storey hotel has a feel of an old Italian Palazzo in its architecture, in its tastefully done rooms, in the great varieties of pasta in the big Tuscan kitchen, and in its warm hospitality and levels of service. Vienna’s oldest specialty Italian restaurant is in this hotel under separate management, with a large collection of Vienna’s famous Chianti and other rare wines. The rooftop restaurant gives a panoramic view of the cities highlights. In the lobby is the piano on which Wagner composed his famous Die Mestersinger von Nurnberg.
Each of the 84 decent-sized rooms is furnished in period style. The rooms with a balcony and a view of the cathedral are especially nice as against the corner ones which could be a bit noisy. All the rooms are equipped with direct-dial phone, minibar, cable-TV, radio, safe and internet. Attached bathrooms are nicely done with dual basins, heated towel racks, a shower unit along with a tub in most. There is a business-center at the hotel available 24 hours. All public areas are equipped with wireless-LAN. There is an underground station right opposite.
