Chinatown

Chicago’s Chinatown is the largest in America’s Midwest and second largest in the US, home to about 10,000 people.  The city’s Chinese population has been concentrated here since before World War I.  Located in the Near South Side, Chinatown is roughly triangular, bordered by the Red Line of the L, Interstate 55, and the Chicago River.

The heart of the neighborhood is Chinatown Square.  Bronze gates and zodiac sculptures guard the entrances to the square.  It is the location of the Chinatown Square Mall, which is filled with restaurants and shops selling all sorts of imported goods.  South Wentworth Avenue is home to a host of authentic restaurants.  English is not always the first language here, so keep that in mind.

Chinatown’s always have a unique atmosphere and delicious food.  Chicago’s is no exception.  Have a meal, or several, and explore the unique shops.  There are several festivals held here throughout the year here too, including the Chinese New Year, summer Dragon Boat Races, and the Moon Festival in September.  The Red Line stops right along Chinatown’s main drag.
