The Grand Palais
The Grand
Palais is a magnificent glass exhibition hall that was built for the 1900 Paris
Exhibition in the Beaux Arts style.
Inspired by London’s Crystal Palace (built for the 1851 Exhibition), the
200m long central hall is topped with a glass, iron, and, steel roof and it is
the largest such structure in the world.
Grand art exhibitions were held here until the 1940s. The Grand Palais was closed throughout the
1990s for renovations, but reopened in 2004.
Though its
glory days are in the past, the Grand Palais is still worth a visit, if only
for the magnificent structure. It is
still periodically home to contemporary art exhibitions, fashion shows, and
even car shows. Check the website for
upcoming events. The police station of
the 8th arrondissement is in the basement. It is located on the shore of the Seine and
attracts 1.5 million visitors each year.
