The Shandur Polo festival, which has become a fixture of life in this remote and mountainous region begins on 7 July and end on 9 July. The traditional two team contest began in 1936 and for many years did not have a fixed date. The Shandur festival is one of the most beautiful locations in the world, situated in a bowl in the mountains near a shimmering lake. The Polo ground is the highest in the world at 3,700 meters. Players must ‘go up’ prior to the festival in order to become acclimated to less oxygen at this altitude. Five teams from Chitral and five from Gilgit went up on 28 June A well known telecom company (a corporate sponsor for the event) has already set up shops to facilitate communication needs of the big international crowd.
