. An internationally recognised accreditation, GGC has been brought to the UAE via an agreement signed by Farnek Avireal – a joint venture between a UAE and Swiss business group – under which the latter has an exclusive license to use and promote GCC across 20 countries in the Middle East. The certification process is being handled by Abdul Quddus Sheikh, Director Engineering at The Palace The Old Town. Sheikh feels that there are many advantages of acquiring the certification: “First of all, a competitive edge, especially when we are trying to attract environmentally conscious travellers, which is a major travel trend today. Secondly, after the initial investment, sustainability starts to pay back straightaway- whether it is by solar panels on the roof, or energy-saving light bulbs. Finally and most importantly, it is our duty to save energy and natural resources for the next generation,” he said. Daniel Anthony, Chief Engineer at Miramar Resort, seemed to agree. “For me the bottom line is all about saving money and saving the environment. What better incentive could we have? I want the Miramar to a shining example of sustainability and totally self-funding."
