W Doha Hotel & Residences Keeps it Green
Published by Irhal
Doha, Qatar (12 June 2013) – W Doha Hotel & Residences today announced the success of its 2013 environmental program, ‘Make A Green Choice’ (MAGC), that was launched in May of this year. The program offers over-night guests the option to contribute to an in house sustainability campaign by making simple choices during their stay. The idea is part of an overall global strategy spearheaded by Starwood Resorts that…

W Doha is passionate about encouraging guests to consume less and support the planet as much as possible. As a result, the hotel has already had more than 200 guests deciding to ‘go green’ during their stay. Upon arrival, stay-over guests are invited to participate in MACG when they check in, by opting to declining housekeeping services to help reduce water and energy consumption. In return, members of the Starwood Preferred Guests (SPG) - the first hotel loyalty program to offer redeemable points not only for hotel usage, but with hundreds of airlines - will be rewarded with 500 Starpoints. Guests also have the option to allow the hotel to donate their points to UNICEF’s environmental work for children.
MAGC complements the W Doha’s ongoing environmental sustainability initiatives, to provide improved guest experiences that positively impacts operational conditions - a win-win for the environment, the guest and the organization. Already, Starwood has found that with just one guest 'making a green choice', the hotel can save roughly 37.2 gallons of water (enough for 1 person to drink almost two cups per day), 0.19 KWH of electricity (enough to run an Energy Star-rated laptop for 10 hours), and 25,000 but of natural gas (enough to heat a 400 square foot room at 70°F for four hours when it's 10°F outside).
Safak Guvenc comments, “Make a Green Choice is just the beginning of our ongoing journey towards environmental sustainability within the hotel, the local community and on global scale. MAGC is a brilliant initiative that highlights the environmental issues that we face, and strive to tackle these without detracting from the exceptional guest experiences we so proudly deliver. We will continue to work with Starwood Hotels and Resorts on similar engagement programs to drive awareness around green issues”.
