The regulation that was announced earlier this year came into effect from February 1. It will be implemented in three phases, said the authority. The third step will be implemented in January 2011. The regulation is in the interest of public protection along with ensuring quality control.

In the first phase that came into effect from April 1, carriers were required to provide to the GCAA insurance documents with evidence of compliance with the minimum insurance requirements - "a valid insurance certificate or other evidence of valid insurance", according to the authority.

The second step will come into effect from July 1 and in it, if a carrier fails to comply with the first phase operations all aircraft movements will be suspended.
