W Doha and Qatar's Ministry of Environment organize beach cleanup
Published by Irhal
Doha, Qatar (June 2013) – Last week, the W Doha Hotel & Residences in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment in Doha, spearheaded a campaign to preserve the beauty of Qatar’s national beaches. Green enthusiasts and volunteers descended on ‘Qatar Family Beach’, a four-kilometer stretch of beach to remove litter and algae pollution. The cleanup is part of an initiative to save Qatar’s marine environment…

The State of Qatar seeks to preserve and protect its unique environment and nurture the abundance of nature, and that development will be carried out with responsibility and respect as a larger project for Qatar’s National Vision of 2030. Safeguarding the environment for future generations is also an integral part of the Starwood’s global campaign to reduce electricity by 30% and water consumption by 20% across all properties by 2020, in order to reduce the world’s carbon footprint and the overall impact it has on nature.
The group demonstrated their commitment to the environment by spending the afternoon combing the beach for unwanted objects that were later taken to recycling disposals. From cigarette butts to fizzy drink cans, the group managed to fill copious bags, proving just how important cleaning marine debris is not just for restoring the natural beauty of the beaches, but also for saving marine life. The campaign is of a larger initiative in Qatar that aims to preserve the environment and its natural balance in order to achieve comprehensible and sustainable development for generations.
Safak Guvenc comments, “The W Doha is honoured to be working alongside Qatar’s Ministry of Environment to raise environmental awareness of pressing issues, such as the preservation of our beaches. Together we aim to educate and raise public awareness of the need to protect not only Qatar’s but also the whole world’s many and varied habitats and the wildlife that depend on them. We will continue to strive to drive awareness on green issues, within the hotel, the local community and on a global scale”.
