Copenhagen History

Copenhagen History

The foundation and creation of Copenhagen was credited to a great warrior in the 11th Century named Bishop Absalon. The development and progress as a trading centre can be attributed to proximity to a harbor and abundant fishing facilities. Throughout history, Copenhagen has a lineage of monarchs; the first being the Danish Queen Margrethe I in 1397 ((1353-1412 – ruled Denmark –Sweden and Norway 1375-1412). The lowest point in the history of Copenhagen is the havoc brought about during the Napoleonic Wars which deprived the city of its people, sustenance and architecture. It was during the 19th and the 20th Century that city evolved into a hub of culture, science, education, arts and politics. After the World War II, the city needed a rehabilitation scheme. In 1948, a policy called as the “Finger Plan” which redeveloped much of the destruction caused by the aftermath of the war. The beginning of the 21st Century was marked by the construction of the Oresund Bridge which connects the city of Copenhagen and Malmö and greatly facilitates both rail and road traffic. The modern city we see today reminds us of the rich cultural heritage and as we go deeper into the history, every sight unfolds a hidden mystery behind its existence.

The bus system at Copenhagen is devised in a very efficient and organized manner. For the convenience of travelers 5 kinds of buses have been developed. Buses carry the bulk of passengers and are linked to six different routes which ultimately lead to different destinations. Buses arrive and depart with an interval of 2 to 6 minutes, the details of which are electronically displayed to all travelers. For night time travel, N Buses are ideal as they run from 1 AM to 5 AM daily. They operate within a network of ten lines and usually run the most during the weekends. If you are planning to pay a visit to the country side or suburbs, hop onto the S Buses which are faster as compared to other lines and offer computation services in areas where any railway services falter. Except for the line 20E which runs between the central square Kongens Nytorv and the DFDS (Oslo/Szczecin ferries) and cruise terminals, E Buses are of limited use to travelers as they offer services to commuters. Purely for the benefit of tourists, the city has recently developed the CityCirkel bus which is an environmental friendly bus and runs between an interval of seven minutes and stops at the city’s most popular attractions. It uses the same tickets as other public buses and trains and is accessible wherever there is a green dot. It leaves after every 30 minutes and in peak season buses depart after an hour. The price for a day is 150 Kr while for two days it is 220 Kr which complements a canal tour boats.

A unique and fun way to travel, and enjoy Copenhagen’s various sights and attractions, is by the DFDS Canal Tours. It is also known as the “water boat” and operates much like a chair lift does; the first one gets to be on the boat. The route is divided into three circular rings at the northern, central and southern part of the inner harbour and canals. Like any other tour bus, these canal tours have either live or pre-recorded tour guides which brief the tourists about the various sights that pass by in English or Danish. The services of the DFDS are subject to changes depending on the weather conditions. During the winter months, special roof-covered boats which central heating are made available for the comfort of tourists. An alternative to these boats are public harbor buses which run parallel to the canal and are much faster and efficient. A point to be noted is that these buses are accessible on the same tickets as other public buses. The city also offers a special promotion offer which allows you to benefit from unrestrained transportation be it on the buses or the DFDS with a payment of 220 Kr.

By bicycle

Being the most popular means of travel amongst the people of Copenhagen, biking can even be the fastest way to go about the city if you pedal fast enough. In order to facilitate bikers, separate lanes are established on main roads alongside proper traffic lanes. Mainly for the tourists, there is a free-public bike service available which they can use simply by inserting a 20 Kr coin in the electronic system. However, the bike is only to be used within the boundaries of the inner city. An infringement of rules would lead to a penalty and/or fines of over 1000 Kr. The public offers you a pay-back guarantee once you return the bike to its stand. It is a Copenhagen tradition to customize these bikes. In 1997, President Clinton was gifted a customized bike as a souvenir when he visited the city. Apart from that, you also have an option of renting a bicycle. For more information please contact :
