Mumbai has a rich and varied history. The origin of its name is also interesting. Mumbai is a combination of two words – ‘Mumba’ and ‘Aai.’ The former is taken from the name of the Koli mother goddess, Mumbadevi and the latter means mother in Marathi. The city was officially accorded this name in 1995. Earlier it was known as Bombay.

Crawford Market is a colorful indoor market named after Arthur Crawford, the first Municipal Commissioner of the city. Later it was renamed after the Maharashtrian social reformer, Jyotirao Phule. It’s a blend of Flemish and Norman architecture with a bass relief depicting Indian peasants in wheat fields just above the main entrance. The frieze was designed by Lockyard Kipling, father of the famous Rudyard Kipling. Across the road stands the Kiplings’ cottage. The market reminds one of Victorian London, with its sweet smell of hay. It was formerly the city’s wholesale produce market. The marketplace is loaded with fresh fruit and vegetables. There are also stalls selling cheese and chocolate. Meat and poultry is also sold here. One end of the market is a pet store. Fresh flowers are also sold here. Gudhi Padwa is celebrated all over the state of Maharashtra. It falls on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April) and marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. It is celebrated with much gaiety and festivity with people adorning their houses with colorful ‘rangoli’ (intricate design made on floor with colored powder) and bamboo staffs (gudhi) decorated with silk and crowned with a brass goblet. This ‘gudhi ’ is said to protect people from evil forces.

Maharashtra Day commemorates the attainment of statehood of Maharashtra on I May 1960. The state government organizes the main function in Mumbai which is held at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai. A ceremonial parade is part of the celebrations comprising members of the State Reserve Police Force, Brihanmumbai Commando Force, Home Guards, Civil Defense, Fire Brigade and City Police.
